HDD LED not blinking and computer won't respond

I've had a weird issue with many Linux distros where if I lock my PC and get back on after a while, my computer won't respond. It appears that the HDD activity LED isn't blinking and the screen is just black. The monitor is in sleep mode because it detects no activity. I try to move the mouse and use the keyboard, but again, it just won't respond. It's weird because sometimes the laser on the bottom of the mouse just turns off as though the PC is turned off. I'm not really sure how to figure out what the issue is. I've tried to use journalctl, but I don't know how to read it.

Cool, I've never been so far off in judging a laptop. This is a real cool laptop! The problem you've encountered, is the NVIDIA card. Two things come into mind:

• install the current NVIDIA drivers (if you haven't already)
• ensure you are booting with uefi (check your bios and possibly reinstall)

Since I don't know your brand of laptop, it might be a communication problem between the power-management (acpi) of your device and the card itself.. In order to find out try the following (if both suggestions don't work):

• Open /etc/default/grub with an editor as sudo.
• Replace the quiet splash line with quiet splash nomodeset
• execute sudo update-grubafterwards.

This should not be a final solution, since nomodeset simply runs havoc with your energy management. If it doesn't work, I'm out of ideas, if it does we should investigate further...
