Remote Into Ubuntu From Windows (Not Locally)

I have a desktop at home that has Ubuntu 20.04 freshly installed and is connected to my router through LAN. I also have a laptop with Windows 10. I'd like to remotely connect to my ubuntu desktop, not just from home but also from work as well (so I'm not gonna be always on the same network). I have tried a few known 3rd party software to do this. (Teamviewer and Chrome Remote Desktop). For teamviewer, given that I constantly want to be able to connect to the computer, it will require me to subscribe to the paid version. I had trouble using Chrome Remote Desktop as well. It showed me black screen. I followed a solution online that had me install LXD on my ubuntu and use LXD on chrome remote desktop to connect to my ubuntu. It did work, however it is not exactly the same desktop experience as ubuntu itself. So I have basically given up on Chrome remote desktop to work.

Basically, what I want to do is more like the remote desktop experience you get with Mac or Windows. (Being able to control the ubuntu desktop directly from my Windows while not being on the same network). I'm a bit confused as to how I could achieve this and whether it is even possible at all or not.
